An equally colorful festival is the Madri Gras carnival, which usually takes place at the end of February or the beginning of March (the date depends on when Ash Wednesday begins, which marks the beginning of Lent). The festival is obliged to the French, it was they who introduced the tradition of celebrating “Fat Tuesday” (this is how the event is translated). For this reason, the French Quarter becomes the venue (the main action takes place on Bourbon Street). The celebration involves a parade led by the King and Queen of the Carnival, who throw sweets and plastic ornaments at visitors, while admiring spectators enjoy catching the prey. And all this – accompanied by musical jazz accompaniment, whose sounds can be heard throughout the city.
In early August, along with the Satchmo SummerFest, New Orleans celebrates the birthday of its famous native, Louis Armstrong (born August 4). The fest owes its name to the nickname of the famous trumpeter. The traditional venue for the event is New Orleans Mint (where the Jazz Museum is located today), while at the festival you can listen to not only classical jazz, but also modern, as well as the so-called big band jazz. In addition, children can show all their skills; a separate stage is organized for novice jazzmen. At the end of April, an equally significant event in the jazz world is held – namely, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, which is traditionally held at the Fair Grounds Race Course. In addition to jazz, you can also listen to related genres – latino, country, rock, blues, funk, soul.
Immediately after the celebration of Louis Armstrong’s birthday, another festival is held – the Whitney White Linen Night, often called the Julia Street Block Party (for the reason that it takes place on Julia Street). The event is dedicated to art in all its manifestations, and magnificent art exhibitions are opening in the festival area. To participate in the fest there is one condition: you need to be dressed in white linen clothes, so you should definitely take such vestments with you if the vacation time falls during the festival. In early June, you can witness the main gastronomic event – the Oyster Festival, which is held on the Woldenberg Park located right next to the picturesque Mississippi River. You can visit it for free, and among the entertainment offered are tastings, master classes and musical performances.
